Dr. Guadalupe Gonzalez, visit to Malaysia
In the frame of the International Scientific and Cultural Cooperation Program of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the distinguished Mexican scholar, Dr. Guadalupe Gonzalez, visited Malaysia with the purpose of increasing the presence of Mexico in the scientific and academic circles in Malaysia, and mainly to open the collaboration between well-known high education and research institutions in both countries. Dr. Gonzalez, who is herself a scholar and researcher at the CIDE (Center for Research and Economic Education), shared the results of her research: “Global Perspective of Latin America: 2008 Regional Survey”. This took place at IKON, Centre for Latin American Studies at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. With this outstanding presentation, Mexico opens a most valuable collaboration and academic exchange between the two countries, which will be extend to other institutions of higher education.
Visit to Malaysia from the internationally recognized Mexican bat expert Dr. Rodrigo Medellin.
As part of the International Scientific and Cultural Cooperation Program of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Rodrigo Medellin, senior researcher of the Ecology Department of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and who is, one of the most prestiged international experts in winged mammals (bats), visited Malaysia with the purpose of establishing and strengthening scientific and academic links between the two countries. In Kuala Lumpur, this Embassy organized a meeting in which researchers and scholars of renowned Malaysian academic institutions, as well as directives from the “Wildlife Trust and Consortium for Conservation Medicine” participated. Likewise and Invited by the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation, and the Medical School of Universiti Malaya Sabah, Dr. Medellin participated in a very intense work visit to the Island of Borneo.
MATTA Fair 2009
For the second year in a row, Mexico was present in the most important Tourism Fair in Malaysia, the “MATTA FAIR 2009”. It took place on the 4,5 and 6th of September in Kuala Lumpur. Mexico was the only country from Latin America participating in this fair. Promotional brochures in English and Chinese were distributed at the colorful stand set up by the Mexico Tourism Board. Personnel from this Embassy and representatives from the Tokyo Representative Office of the Mexico Tourism Board, shared with the public information regarding Mexican tourism destinations.
During the duration of the fair, around 70,000 people visited the more than 800 stands that participated on the event, more than 200 travel agencies were represented, as well as airlines and other countries.
199 Anniversary of the Mexican Independence Celebration.
On September 15th, with more than 350 guests including Mexicans citizens residing in Malaysia, the Embassy of Mexico celebrated the 199 anniversary of the Independence Day at the Renaissance Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Dato Lee Chee Leong, Malaysian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs was the guest of honor representing the Malaysian government, and together with Ambassador Jorge Alberto Lozoya, toasted to the well being of both nations. In this event, typical Mexican food and drinks were offered; Ambassador Lozoya gave the traditional “Grito de Dolores”, to which the Mexican nationals responded enthusiastically.
Working visit of the Ambassador of Mexico to Sarawak.
Invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia and by the government of the State of Sarawak, the Ambassador of Mexico to Malaysia, Mr. Jorge Alberto Lozoya, visited Sarawak in the island of Borneo, on November 5th to 7th, 2009.
The working visit took place in Kuching, where Malaysian local and national authorities shared with Ambassador Lozoya and other foreign diplomats, information on the economic priorities of Sarawak in the fields of renewable energy, forestry and tourism. Special emphasis was given on the importance of the economic development corridor that links the cities of Tanjung Manis (agro industry), Mukah (services), Samalajau (heavy industry), Tumor and Baram (rural development).
Additionally, the Diplomats were provided the opportunity to visit the Semenggok Ecological Reserve, where the country’s most important centre for Orangutan Rehabilitation, as well as the Centre of Biodiversity, dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of the vast natural resource heritage located in Sarawak. It was emphasizing the importance of preserving the traditional culture and knowledge of the aborigine local communities of the island. (Photo attached).

Trade mission of Mexican businessmen visited Malaysia.
In the framework of the APEC Economic Leaders Summit attended by the President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, which took place in Singapore, a trade mission of Mexican businessmen visited Malaysia from November 8th to 10th, 2009. The mission was part of the commercial strategy of the Mexican government to diversify markets for Mexican exports and explore new opportunities to do business in the Asia- Pacific region.
The group of Mexican businessmen was headed by Ambassador Sergio Ley, President of the Asia-Pacific section of the Mexican Entrepreneurs for Foreign Trade Council (COMCE), and organized with the support of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of Mexico in Malaysia and the regional office of PROMEXICO in Singapore.
The program for the trade mission included a meeting with Malaysian entrepreneurs at the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM), with the aim of exchanging information to establish future business ventures. The entrepreneurs of both countries analyzed the potential of the export opportunities for Halal beef, fresh fruits and vegetables, low-income housing projects as well as infrastructure projects like highways, airports, telecommunications and IT, hospital management, pharmaceutical production and medical equipment. An Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation was signed between Mr. Syed Hussien Al Habshee, Secretary General for NCCIM and Ambassador Sergio Ley for COMCE.
After sharing a working lunch, offered by the Ambassador of Mexico in Malaysia, Jorge Alberto Lozoya, the members of the Mexican trade mission had bilateral meetings with potential Malaysian enterprises for doing business. The mission visited also the International Trade Fair, “INTRADE Malaysia 2009”, where they were able to explore new contacts with Malaysian enterprises interested in importing Mexican products and services.
The presence of this Mexican group of businessmen in Malaysia, constitutes a first and firm step towards the organization of future trade missions from Mexico to Malaysia in areas that were identified to be favorable for exports and services offered by Mexico. (photos attached)
