INICIO CONTACTO PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES Noviembre 21 de 2009

11 Jul 2008

It is with great pleasure that I take this opportunity to address the visitors of our website and share some thoughts on the mission conferred to me by President Felipe Calderón as Ambassador of Mexico to the United Kingdom.

Over the past two decades I have had the honour to represent my country in six different nations, five of them in Europe.

Those experiences have convinced me of the exceptional opportunities that this part of the world offers to a country like Mexico, deeply committed to the same values and aspirations that have shaped the nations of this continent: democracy, human rights and international cooperation.

For Mexico, the relationship with the UK has three fundamental angles: the one pertaining strictly to the bilateral relationship, and those derived from the British role in the international scene in general and in the European Union in particular.

From a bilateral perspective, we recognize the significance of the UK as the fourth economy in the world and the fifth exporting nation, as well as its importance as a net generator of international investment flows. We also acknowledge the position of Great Britain as the home base of a highly professional media, with vast influence in world opinion, and of world-renowned universities and high-technology research centers. These prestigious institutions have undoubtedly played a prominent role in the configuration of the tendencies in the economic, political and social thought of this age.

From an international viewpoint, we regard the United Kingdom as a privileged interlocutor with whom to discuss current and vital affairs concerning the United Nations and other international forums and institutions. On the European context, we are aware of the role the UK will continue to play in an expanded European Union, and we are certain of the active role that Britain will play in the ongoing dialogue between Europe and Latin America, particularly in the forthcoming meeting of Heads of State and Government of Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union that will take place in Guadalajara, Mexico, at the end of May.

Britain had a very constructive role in the negotiations for a EU-Mexico Free Trade Agreement a few years ago. That comprehensive accord, which is beginning to demonstrate its potential, was possible in large part due to the unprecedented process of political reform and institutional renewal that Mexico went through in the past decade.

Today, Mexico's political system relies on the basic freedoms of society, on fundamental checks and balances, and on free and fair elections. Even though we are still confronted with significant challenges, particularly in the social arena and especially over the need to ensure a fair distribution of the fruits of our economic growth, it is essential to recognize the progress in our democratic life. That progress has been the result of a collective effort: political parties, the media, non-governmental organizations and, above all, citizens' participation have played a leading role in promoting political change.

Mexico is certain of its place as an important interlocutor in the world scene. Not only because of our strategic geographical situation, the size of our population or our vast natural resources, but also as a result of our decision to modernize and diversify our economy and to keep our economic fundamentals in order.

Our role as partners in one of the most dynamic economic zones in the world, through the 10-year old NAFTA agreement, as well as our strong historical and cultural ties with Latin America and the Caribbean, and our privileged access to markets in Europe, Asia, and most of our hemisphere, have allowed us to become one of the ten most important nations in the world in terms of both the size of our economy and the volume of our trade.

Those achievements, of course, have had an impact on our international stance, driving our resolve to play an active role in the definition of the new international order based on the principles and the long-standing traditions of our foreign policy. I am determined to convey to the British people the extent of those encouraging developments, which will enable us to carry out our pending tasks.

Although the presence of Mexico in the UK is growing, and the bilateral relationship is at a good level in the political, economic and cultural areas, its real potential is not yet thoroughly exploited. We seek to deal with the challenges of the whole bilateral relationship from two perspectives: the adequate management of the problems that require our daily attention, and the long-term analysis of the areas susceptible of new and imaginative approaches.

Juan José Bremer
Ambassador of Mexico to the United Kingdom

MOCTEZUMA, AZTEC RULER

11 Oct 2009
MOCTEZUMA, AZTEC RULER

The book was presented at the Embassy of Mexico on Monday 5 October. Ambassador Juan Jose Bremer celebrated the publication of this magnificent volume, that goes beyond the exhibition itself.

This richly illustrated book is published to accompany the British Museum’s final exhibition in the series exploring great rulers, on view from 24 September 2009 – 24 January 2010. With chapters by international authorities, it looks at the world of the Aztecs and the life, reign and ultimate fall of Moctezuma II. Attention is drawn to the fascinating but often contradictory accounts of key events given by Mexican and Spanish sources and the circumstances surrounding Moctezuma's own death are examined afresh. Drawing upon the latest international research and the ongoing archaeological discoveries in Mexico City, the book reassesses the aftermath and legacy of the Conquest, including the role it played in shaping modern Mexican identity.

THE MEXICAN GOVERMENT DECIDED TO WIND UP THE ELECTRICITY COMPANY LUZ Y FUERZA DEL CENTRO

Luz y Fuerza del Centro faced an unsustainable financial situation. During the last nine years, due to its disability to generate its own earnings and reduce its financial costs, the annual subsidies that it received quadruplicated, reaching this year 42 thousand million pesos. The operation of this Organism is inefficient and of low productivity. The electric service provided to homes and industries in the country’s center region was deficient, which limited the development of productive investments that generate employment in this region.

FIESTA, DAYS OF THE DEAD AND OTHER FESTIVALS

The book by Chloë Sayer was presented at the Embassy of Mexico on Monday 5 October. Ambassador Bremer celebrated the publication of this outstanding volume.

Mexico has a vast range of festivals, several commemorating national events but mostly religious or spiritual in inspiration. After the Spanish Conquest of 1521, Roman Catholic teachings fused with the beliefs of native civilizations, and even today the popular arts and crafts draw upon the Church as a rich source of imagery. Fiestas are often lavish and extremely costly. With extensive preparations, they commemorate local saints’ days and religious holidays such as Christmas, Carnival and Holy Week.

This year, Mexico was put to the test

  • During the last year, several circumstances put the strength of our institutions and our society to the test, such as the global economic crisis, the emergence of the A(H1N1) virus, the virulence of the organized crime gangs, a reduction in oil production and falling oil prices on the international market, and the impact of one of the worst droughts seen in decades.
  • The federal government has faced the challenges that have arisen and, at the same time, has led Mexico toward sustainable human development.
